First year student tips

Your first year at college is an experience of mixed emotions. You are in a new place surrounded by new and unfamiliar faces. For some this can be exciting and seen as a chance to start fresh. But for others it may be a very stressful and overwhelming experience. No matter what your initial thought may be, it all gets easier and becomes familiar in time. Here are some helpful suggestions and tips to make transitioning into college an easier and smooth process:

  • When it comes to choosing a roommate for your freshman year I highly advise not choosing a friend or someone you know. This may cause you to stay close with high school or known friends and not allow you to branch out and meet new people as easily.
  • Don't be afraid to be yourself and talk to new people. Everyone in your dorm is in the same situation and just wants to make friends and fit in. Talk to people and don't be shy!
  • Join a few clubs or activities. This allows you to get involved and meet new people that have something in common with you.
  • Don't worry about what others think about you. This isn't high school and being "Popular" or "cool" isn't a big deal anymore. Try to find friends you really will enjoy being around and can have fun with
  • Teachers don't baby you like they do in high school. stay on top of when assignments are due and contact the teacher if you need help or have any questions
  • In any class you have try and befriend someone or a few people. This will help you make friends and can lead to having study groups or having someone give you notes if you miss a day of class
  • Getting use to the college environment isn't going to be easy for everyone. If you feel that you are having a hard time adjusting, you aren't the only one. try and organize yourself, talk to a friend or professor if needed, and most importantly, give it time! It may take a month or two before you feel totally comfortable in your new environment.
  • Go out sometimes, its normal in college. Most people socialize and meet people by going out on weekends. Try not to get too involved with going out that your grades will start to reflect it though. Remember you're paying for education, not to have a care-free lifestyle

IF you can keep these few tips in mind, adjusting to college should be a little bit easier. College is a different experience for everyone. Make college the experience you want it to be, not what others want it to be for you.
